JUVENILE JUSTICE IN IOWA: IS THE SYSTEM FAILING BLACK YOUTH? According to the Sentencing Project, African American youth in Iowa are more likely to be detained in the juvenile justice system than youth in any other state in the nation, at a rate of 721 per 100,000 compared to 83 per 100,000 for White youth. A 2020 Report from The Iowa Department of Human Rights Criminal and Juvenile Justice Planning Division identifies areas of racial and ethnic disparities in Iowa’s juvenile justice system. This panel will weigh in on systemic changes needed to eliminate these disparities.
